Driving History

From a Motorsport mad teenager Steve started as he meant to go on with successes in autocross and single event rallies. Early results included several FTD,s in autocross in escorts and his first serious attempt at stage rallying resulted in winning the London Counties stage rally championship with a maximum score. Finances prevented any continuation until 1984 when he competed in the Motoring News road rally championship finishing third overall. He finished second in 1985 and won the championship in 1986 with six rally wins.

Financial constraints and business commitments prevented further competition until 1988 when he competed in the British rally championship in Group N Sierra Cosworths. Some notable drives against top class competition produced some excellent results especially on Tarmac. This continued in 1989 with the high point being second overall on the Circuit of Ireland before an accident caused retirement.

Further successes followed on the Mintex National rally championship in 1990 and 1991 winning the group N championship both years with numerous Gp N wins and overall podium places.

Hills business had started to take off and no further competition was possible until 1994 when he purchased an ex world championship Mitsubishi Galant for the National rally championship. Success was almost immediate with many podium places and Two group B titles. A hard fought 2nd place on the London International rally against the likes of Malcolm Wilson and Pete Doughty on tarmac was a notable success.

The old Galant was eventually pensioned off to be replaced by a Lancer Evolution 3. This was part of the expansion of Hills Motorsport business and was developed and built in house. A problematical gearbox caused a string of retirements but a win on the Bulldog rally in 1997 highlighted the cars potential.

Due to business commitments only a few events were completed in the interim but winning the Jersey International twice and the Loctite National Rally sprint Championship were signs that the speed was still there,

So now here we are moving onto the Rallycross scene, having competed in his first Rallycross meeting in 2005 and experiencing one of the biggest accidents of his career, with no part of it being his fault. A new car has been built complete with a Julian Godfrey Engineering Engine which has proven to be a major contender in the 2007 British Championship.
